Moth or Monster?

A couple of days ago we found this amazing creature attached to our terrace - he was about 7cm long and took off rather impressively at dusk that night. I've never seen a moth like it before - he almost looks like a bat (maybe they all look like that and I've just never looked close enough)

It's the scary 'eyes' on his back that really creep me :) Does anyone know anything about these moths?

updated: I just did a google search and discovered it was a Convolvulus Hawk-moth (Agrius convolvuli)

In Swaziland we used to have ginormous, huge moths. They were pretty inoffensive, though.

Nice moth. I've had hummingbird hawkmoths visit the rhododendron bush twice in the last 4 years. They come up here for the summer from the meditteranean area. They never landed and were moving waaay too fast for me to even think of running to get a camera.
I like moths. Mrs M hates them.

Some think that a sign of a moth is a warning or an omen to pay attention...because moths are known for distroying the wealth of those that don't pay attention....from divinity text.

Pay attention to the crys of the needy.....and if you refresh another then you will be refreshed..

This is what i know about the sign of a moth.

Moth.. I like the texture and monotony of their wings, but this one looks almost like hairy - which I don't like.
