Gioia Magazine!

I'm so excited!! 3 of my glass pieces are in the Italian magazine Gioia this week!!! It's on the newstands today so I haven't physically got a copy yet but I have been sent the photos!! They are just awesome! (I apologise for the overuse of exclamation marks but I did say I was excited!! oops and again)

They feature as 'props' in a children's fashion shoot for Christmas, and the artistic genius behind this work is photographer and friend Frances Melhop. She used pieces from her own little collection of my glass and when I saw the photos I just gasped - they are so totally magical!

You can find more photos from the shoot featuring work by Norwegian-based felt artist Inger Maaike on her fab blog here

You can also buy some of Frances Melhop's enchanting work at her Etsy shops, matchstickgirl and enchantedpond

So Frustrating!!!

Trying to photograph this garland !! It's been snowing the last few days so this afternoon we had a break in the clouds and I rushed out to photograph it but the sun was so low it's looks too...flat Normally I like my photos - the light here is usually bright enough to get good shadow and true colour representation but today I was a little too late I think and the winter sun a little to weak. I had a similar problem photographing magenta glass recently, I wasn't even going to list this bunting and simply sell it from my gallery but Aaron grumbled that I was being stupid and overstressing.

Well anyway... I feel like crying lol because I was so pleased with the garland and it looks like rubbish in the pics :(

So I'll post a cute photo of the donkeys and mule I can see from my atelier balcony so that this post isn't all grumbling :) They are brought to this field each spring for a few weeks and then again in the autumn. Usually they are taken away to the valley just before the snows arrive but this year the snow arrived a little too soon!

Living Magically

There's always something a little bewitching about the light thrown by stained glass so this seemed like a good title for my new garland!! It has just been listed in my Etsy shop here

Bobby Pins and Other Cute Things

When I get really fed up working with glass (like those days when I cut or burn myself for example!) I find a nice way to relax is by getting out a box of findings and little vintage cabochons and making up these pretty little hair clips or bobby pins. And then of course, there's the fun of choosing a pretty card to display them on - I hand stamp each of these in ornate baroque silver swirls and then usual finish with ribbon to match the pin. ~~Totally play time!! Also in the display tray are brooches, rings and a few earrings. I'm hoping they will be popular at the christmas market, as they are a great price for last minute stocking fillers (the range in price from 5 to 10 euros) .....and then I can make more for my atelier table :)

It's a Boot Thing

I'd wear boots 365 days a year if the weather permitted - I love them! From Doc Martens to a dainty heeled knee high, you can't beat a nice pair of boots. This very splendid one was in a shoe repairer's window in Barcelona's old town. Aaron said it didn't look very comfy - who cares about comfort - it's fabulous!!!!!!

Fragments of La Sagrada Familia

I'm not a big Gaudi fan, but you can't visit Barcelona without visiting at least one work by the Architect. Everyone knows the Sagrada Familia so I will just add photos of the pieces that interested me, which was mostly the juxtapostion of the scaffolding/building site along side the finished stained glass windows.

scaffolding in the centre of the church, just as majestic and beautiful as the finished stone pillars

light from a stained glass window falls on pillars and taupalin

glimpses of stained glass through scaffolding

Gaudi's model for arches and building stresses

The object above is my favourite 'find' in Barcelona, made of strings and little bags of lead shot, Gaudi used this system to help understand the stresses and weight distribution for his arches and pillars - you need to turn the photo upside down to 'see' the church structure better. It's so beautiful ...now, if all those little bags were pieces of stained glass.....

The Dresden Dolls

I came back from Barcelona late this afternoon, totally exhausted after trying to cram in too much culture and good food. I'll post some photos in a day or so when I get round to emptying my suitcase and finding my camera....

I went with intention of finding a great poster or print for Aaron's birthday and maybe some early presents for family....the only thing I bought was a Dresdon Dolls CD for myself (I'm a very bad shopper!)

The Dresden Dolls

So anyway I'll post their very visually lush website for you to peruse here

Spirit of Venice

This time last year we were leaving for our trip to Venice, I know I'm off to Barcelona in 2 days but I wish I was going back to that fabulous city instead!! Sadly Aaron grumbled about that idea - and it is his birthday present after all...

I've been sketching and gathering ideas inspired by that trip since we returned but the panels and 3 dimensional pieces I have planned won't see the light of day until the new year, when I can take a break from the little gift items that seem to have taken over my life these past few weeks.....I really shouldn't complain but creatively I'm screaming to start larger projects again.

So, as it's the anniversary of our visit, it seems like an appropriate time to show my Venice inspired earrings!

They are pretty little globes of handmade blown glass hanging from handmade antiqued copper swirls - they remind me of the lamps hanging from the night gondolas, of Murano island, and of the ironwork on the corner of buildings. Everything beautiful in it's imperfections.

The pair pictured below are available at my online Etsy shop here

Pretty Fabulous Things pt 5

It's been a few weeks since a highlighted one of my fav Etsy shops but this one just makes me smile so much and takes me right back home (and a few years) :)

Liverpool's British Cream Tea makes yummy play food out of recylced felt, but not just any play food but cola bottles, butterfly cakes, sticks of seaside rock, dolly mixtures ...all taking me back more years than I care to remember now.

I want to play!!!!!!!!!

Winter White Rose Garland

A few weeks ago I wanted to make a 'Frida Kahlo' inspired garland with flowers and bright colours and ribbons and stuff....I couldn't decide on the colours so it's still on my to-do list but I did like the idea of using some flowers as extra decoration on my buntings.

So I went the easy option of 'colourless' first and made this one in wispy white glass and creamy white fabric rosebuds. It's tied with antique gold and soft taupe satin ribbons and the glass is embellished with vintage faux pearls.

You can find this garland in my online shop here

Maybe I'll expand on this white garland/flowers to make a series of wedding garlands next year. I also fancy learning how to make fabric flowers myself ....off to add this to the to-do list.......

Today is also the last day to order a custom panel for christmas, and I think I'll also remove the glass wings from my Etsy shop - I have so much to do already, and I'm off to Barcelona next week and then Ireland at the beginning of December and then the christmas market .... there is just not enough time to get things done!

Naughty Mr Lawrence

He looks like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth, but fluffy cute Mr L was a naughty pussycat on Halloween. Not content with Scienceplan biscuits and a Kitekat treat he snuck off to find a tastier nibble .....

Poor Harriet didn't stand a chance :(
